TIDAL ENERGY

What is tidal stream energy?

The world’s tides are created by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, and the earth’s rotation.

The power of the tides can be captured and converted into electricity. Innovative technologies, pioneered in Europe, are used to harness the energy of the tides. These machines produce electricity from the movement of water flowing in and out – called a tidal ‘stream’.

About tidal energy

Thanks to the constant cycles of tides, tidal energy production can be predicted hundreds of years in advance, and it is not affected by the weather.

By virtue of this predictability, tidal energy is an essential part of Europe’s energy future. It is a clean, predictable energy source, with a huge indigenous resource. The EU has set an ambitious goal to reach 40 GW of installed capacity for ocean energy by 2050.

Tidal energy production is expected to grow massively in the next few years, as more and more large-scale projects provide power to the electricity grid, powering homes and businesses in Europe and the world.
